Debido a que Lars Ulrich se sentia mal y fue hospitalizado y que la presentación en el Download Festival 2004 era imposible cancelar, James Hetfield se puso a conseguir voluntarios para remplazar a Ulrich y se encontro con Dave Lomabrdo (Slayer), Joey Jordison (Slipknot) y Flemming Larsen (tecnico/asistente de Lars Ulrich).
