D.R.I fue formada el 2 de mayo de 1982 en la ciudad de Houston Texas.
El grupo empezó a tocar en la casa de los padres de Kurt y Eric. El ruido que hacia la banda era el motivo de las quejas del papa de Kurt y Eric. Esto fue la inspiración del videoclip madman en donde se mostraba al padre de Kurt y Eric interrumpiendo la practica de la banda por el ruido que ocasionaban.

En noviembre 6 y 7 de 1982 D.R.I grabo su primer lanzamiento, Dirty Rotten EP, con 22 canciones en un EP de 7" de 18 minutos. Solo 1000 copias de este EP fueron sacadas, haciéndolo ahora un raro objeto de colección. La demanda causo que este EP fuera sacado en un LP de 12", hecho en 1983, y llamado Dirty Rotten LP
