En 1981 Brian Slagel, fundador de Metal Blade Records decidio hacer una compilacion de bandas de metal underground y sin compañia disquera.

Este fue el debut de muchas bandas como Pandemonium, Malice, Bitch, and Cirith Ungol, por supuesto sobresalian dos bandas que harian cosas mas grandes: Black 'n' Blue y Metallica

Debido al inesperado exito del disco, Brian Slagel decidio re-lanzarlo ya que la primera edición era de 1000 copias. Metallica grabo otra versión de "Hit the lights"
